Why do it?

Plans for the Future

Getting pregnant is more of a someday thing than a now thing.

Creating Options

You may not know if you want kids yet, but you know you want options.

Medical Prevention

You have a health condition that might affect your fertility.

When to do it.

What does Ovarian Reserve mean for fertility?

The ovarian reserve is the number of egg follicles you have in your ovaries. You can bet that’s an important factor when it comes to your fertility. Your ovarian reserve also decreases with age. While it’s not the only factor that determines your fertility, it’s important to know what you’re working with when considering your options.

Expectations
& Outcomes

You are one-of-a-kind with ever changing needs and you can expect that treatment outcomes differ depending on age, ovarian reserve, and hormone levels. During the consult, your nurse will discuss the best options for you and create a plan based on your needs and goals.

Safety
& Efficacy

Like all things fertility and reproduction, the outcomes of egg freezing vary for each person. Freezing of eggs does not guarantee successful pregnancy in the future, but it can certainly increase your chances and take some pressure off. You can trust that your team at CNY Preserve will be sure to talk you through any issues you might face and the range of outcomes you could encounter with fertility treatments.

Eggs, Embryos & IVF

Egg vs. Follicle
Follicles are little protective sacs that keep your eggs safe. A follicle only releases an egg from the ovaries if the follicle itself is well-developed and ready. Follicles are also sensitive; they’re impacted by things like age, self-care, and diet. We’re experts in giving follicles proper encouragement so they’re ready to develop and release your eggs (aka ovulate).

Egg Freezing vs. Embryo Freezing
An egg is a cell that hasn’t been fertilized with sperm. An embryo is an egg that has been fertilized with sperm. While embryo freezing makes sense for patients who are ready to fertilize their eggs with a partner or donor, others will simply want to freeze their eggs for now. We offer both at CNY Preserve.
+ LEARN MORE ABOUT EMBRYO FREEZING

Egg Freezing vs. IVF

Both processes use hormones to stimulate follicles so that multiple eggs are produced and retrieved. However, with IVF, the retrieved eggs are immediately fertilized with sperm, which turns them into (pop quiz!) embryos. Those embryos are implanted back in the uterus in hopes of immediate pregnancy, whereas egg freezing leaves the eggs unfertilized and frozen for future use.

Assessment & Planning

Consult Preparation

We’ll schedule your consult 1-3 months out from the first time you call us. During this time, we ask that you prepare for your consult by having a recent AMH hormone level, information about your medical past, goals, and lifestyle on hand so we can make the best recommendations to maximize your fertility.

Blood Tests

The most essential value we need is your AMH level, which reveals information about your ovarian reserve. You can get this blood test done at a local lab or with your OB/GYN. Your local doctor may want to test for FSH and Estradiol levels as well, but be sure to have your AMH level ready before your initial consult so we can recommend the best practices and prescriptions for you.

Ultrasound

Prior to your consult, an optional ultrasound can be done through your local provider or at a CNY Preserve monitoring location. This can give us additional information about your baseline, any underlying challenges, and how to tailor a fertility path for your specific needs.

Consult: A Plan for You

There’s no one formula for freezing eggs. It’s all about who you are and what you need to be at your most fertile. You’ll speak to one of our CNY Preserve nurses during your consult. Using all the information you’ve gathered, we’ll create a custom fertility plan for you!

Let’s team up to take control
of your fertility.

Preparation

You come prepared to every interview, yoga class, and performance.
Prepare for your egg freezing treatment with CNY Preserve’s wellness guidelines.

Supplements

We’ll assess what supplements will best support you. Along with prenatal vitamins and Omega 3s, supplements like CoQ10 or Ubiquinol can help to boost the quality of your eggs.

Nutrition

High protein. High fat. Low carbs. Keto and Paleo diets are the ideal preparation for egg freezing and general anti-aging. Vegans and vegetarians: we’ve got tips for you too.

Wellness

The whole self-care vibe is here to stay. Moderate exercise, good sleep, acupuncture, and mindfulness can be very effective in improving fertility.

Egg Freezing Process

Egg freezing allows us to delay having children by producing and retrieving lots of eggs, then freezing them to save them for future use. From the first day of taking meds to the last day when we retrieve the eggs, the whole process takes about two weeks.

OVARIAN STIMULATION

We want to get your ovaries into high-gear and make as many mature eggs as possible. Hormone medications encourage many follicles to grow strong and healthy so they produce multiple eggs. You’ll inject these simple shots yourself (they’re easier than you think – check out these Injection Lessons) to keep the chances of a healthy someday-baby high.

The medication step of this process lasts about 8-12 days.
  • Monitoring: Bloodwork & Ultrasounds
We’ll keep an eye on how you’re responding to meds by testing your blood and performing ultrasounds to monitor hormone levels throughout the process. That way, we can fine-tune your process as we go.
  • Trigger
This is the final medication. You’ll take it 36 hours before the next step (retrieval!) to make sure your eggs are optimally mature for the procedure.
Procedure: Egg Retrieval & Harvesting

This is the moment! It might sound a little intense, but this process is quick and minimally invasive. A transvaginal ultrasound probe is used to find the mature follicles and a thin needle enters the follicles to take out the eggs.

When we say quick, we mean it. The process takes 20-30 minutes and you’ll be sedated, so it’ll feel even quicker.
Examination of Eggs & Freezing

We’ll check those eggs out right away and let you know how many we got. We use a method of freezing called vitrification that flash freezes eggs to keep harmful ice crystals from forming. Once cooled, we store the eggs in tanks for preservation.

We take a look at all of the eggs retrieved and always preserve as many as possible.
Recovery

Good work! You deserve some rest. We encourage you to relax and recover for at least 24 hours, but you know your body best; for some people it can take a few days or more. Kick back, watch some movies, and congratulate yourself for being a badass by taking charge of your reproductive health! We’ll be checking in with you after the process as well.

Everyone responds differently so track your body’s recovery and stay in touch with the CNY Preserve team, as needed, throughout the week following your procedure.

Post Procedure

Long Term Storage & Plans

Eggs can be frozen a long time. How long? It’s not exactly known, but successful thaws have come from eggs frozen up to 14 years. Most people store them for 2-10 years until they’re ready to use them. One year of storage is included in your egg freezing costs!

How are frozen eggs used?

When you’re ready, we’ll help you thaw and fertilize your eggs to create embryos which are then used for pregnancy. If you decide you don’t want to use them, you may be able to donate them to another person or we’ll make sure they’re disposed of properly.
